We are currently exploring possibilities for the storage of electrical energy by means of a chemical battery (various battery technologies) and the combination of hydrogen storage and fuel cells. We optimise the production of batteries, the efficiency of energy storage and the operating temperatures (important for mobile applications at temperatures of -20°C to 60°C). Furthermore, we optimise and improve battery management and battery charging systems. We have a well-equipped research laboratory with large climatic test chambers, computer-aided charging and discharging simulators and a hydrogen laboratory. 15 researchers from BFH, CSEM and BKW already work in the laboratory. The area of research is managed by Prof Dr Andrea Vezzini, Head of the BFH-CSEM Energy Storage Research Centre and Professor of Industrial Electronics at the Bern University of Applied Sciences.

· 2003: Visiting Guest Professor at General Motors Advanced Technology Center in Torrance, USA (7 months)

· 2007: Distinguished Visiting Scientist of the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia (5 months)

· 2009: Co-proprietor and member of the board of directors at IPS Integrated Power Systems AG – lithium-ion battery systems for applications in transport vehicles.

· Inventor of 8 patent families / 23 patent publications
